TERNI

HEART OF STEEL

From December 4 to 17, 2023 Details was in residence in Terni with the project Spazio Zeta curated by Associazione Demetra, Palmetta Center in collaboration with Indisciplinarte Terni in the context of the C.U.R.A Centro Umbro di Residenze Artistiche project.

In a festively decorated city, full of Christmas lights and decorations, Pīnar Bekaroglu and I thought of rendering our personal reflection on the difficulty of celebrating Christmas in light of all the atrocities that are affecting the world: from the numerous wars, to the climate crisis “playing” in addition with the more capitalistic aspect that accompanies Christmas.
The presence in Terni of the huge Steelworks, and the PMAL (Light Weapons Maintenance Pole) inspired some of the drawings as well as the “Polar Bears,” the “Lead Soldiers,” and the “marzipan children” of the decorations in Europe Square.

HUMANITY

Throughout the residency period, we worked with a group of foreign youth from Tunisia, Bangladesh, and Ukraine.

Throughout our residency, we worked with a group of young foreigners from Tunisia, Bangladesh, and Ukraine. This made us reflect further on the “real need” to burden our cities with Christmas lights and decorations at the expense of Humanity.”
Precisely this last word, HUMANITY, was fundamental in the research we conducted together with another young man, this time from Terni: Valentino Gatti, a very young poet who has written numerous texts inspired by as many drawings.
Thanks again to the Demeter Association \ Palmetta Center and all the lovely people we met during this time as well as the other artists who like us worked “on the invisible.”!!!!!

Terni Christmas Tree

Every year cities compete for the most eye-catching Christmas tree.
This year in Terni, the tree is offered by Acciaierie!
An all stainless steel tree, solid and light.

Map of the City

Map of the city.

Poetry by Valentino Gatti.

“In the veins of the world there is a thorny evil
Which is a tin beast that cries out for death.
In my breast there is an evil of smoke and gunfire
And you strip it to the cold in my pupils.
And you clutch my rough palm
In the warmth of your silence.

Take me in thought in the morning when you pray,
Take me in desire when you fall asleep,
take me in the evening among the city’s glare,
take me through the flashes and decorations of the season,
Let me be lost but always feel between my ribs
The warmth of your very human eyes.

In the veins of the world there is a thorny evil
But your human heart will give me
Warmth to weep and love, heal.”

Thyrus or Tiro di Terni is a beast that from the marshy grounds plagued the Umbrian municipality until one day in the 12th century a horseman confronted and killed it.
The municipality from that day placed the beast in its coat of arms with the inscription, “Thyrus et amnis dederunt signa Teramnis” (the Thyrus and the river gave the insignia to Terni).

Merry Christmas

An old vintage postcard inciting children to be good in the run-up to Christmas.

Poetry by Valentino Gatti.

“I will wake up with the cold breath of Christmas Eve.
In the lungs.
He will stare at me

a barely illuminated garland
By the light of a candle.
Perhaps

a few gingers on TV.
Maybe

some good wishes over the phone.

I will wake up suffocated by an icon
fat, dressed in red, bearded
Whispering “”open presents.””
Thank you,

I didn’t want the gifts.
I wanted a human kiss on the forehead.”

Burrows...or "La Pajata"

666 – “burrows” is one of the most uttered words of late 2023.
Underground tunnels in the Gaza Strip, apparently used by Hamas.
Burrows like intestines featured in the famous local dish “La Pajata.”
A soldier comes out, looking a bit puzzled…will it be because he hasn’t found any terrorists…or because of the effect of the Pajata????

Who will be the lucky one to kiss this soldier?

Mom

An ordinary mother, waiting for her son to return to the war.
Perhaps the mother of the soldier next door?

Poetry by Valentino Gatti.

“The moon has the pallor of sorrow.
And the light of a prayer.
There is a mother who prays
That the son not be killed.
He asks the Lord for a sound of footsteps
In the avenue.
The avenue illuminated by the moon
is empty.
There is only the muted echo of the stars
Over the veil of the sad mother.”

Lamenting over the ?

At Christmas we celebrate the birth of Jesus, but right now so many children are dying in the very same Middle Eastern area.
In this drawing, a mother mourns her loss, just as Our Lady mourns the loss of her child.
At the same time this being she holds in her arms is asexual and it does not even matter what “species” she belongs to.

Poetry by Valentino Gatti.

“They tell that I saw my son die.
On a cross, with black nails on the hands,
Above a hill that is now holy.
They tell that I saw my son resurrected.
I appear with my blue veil
like a longed-for hope
On the faces of women with black veils
Holding a thin and light thread in their hands,
suspended as fragilely as life
Of children in the war.
I appear on their face in hope puny
That they should never hold in their arms
in a symbol of piety
The shipwrecked bodies of dead children.”

People Beyond Things

A moment in the private, intimate life of Santa Claus.
A normal person who, like everyone else, shops at the supermarket.

Poetry by Valentino Gatti.

“”Come home – I’m hungry – my stomach
grinds its teeth for some plastic gift.
For how heavy the envelopes
disassemble your costume, your beard almost falls
off.
Your name
bears the weight of the snowy afternoon
spent like jackals
in the malls.
You no longer fly the skies trailed by reindeer,
your journey is fulfilled in the journey
between the marketplace of matter and the homes
of bodies bent to wear out.
Your gift for the Nativity
is a piece of dead matter.
From the window you see the children laughing
in the snow: perhaps their laughter
is the Gift of my dreamed Christmas.”
